The California Missionary Baptist Convention (CMBSC) is extending an invitation to our young people who are interested in furthering their education.  We want to be an encouragement by offering a scholarship award to those who meet the criteria.

Applicants should be willing to maintain an open dialogue with the Scholarship Committee and with quarterly status reports of progress.

Who Can Apply for a Book Scholarship?

  • Applicants must be in good standing with a CMBSC registered church.
  • Applicants who are attending a four year college or university, junior college or trade school during the academic year immediately following the scholarship award process.  Only Full time students will be considered.

Who Evaluates the Scholarship Applications?

  • Members of the Book Scholarship will evaluate all applications received on or before the deadline and will award the number and amount of scholarships agreed upon by the Committee.
  • All applications and related materials become the property of the CMBSC and will be held in strict confidence.

When are Scholarships Awarded?

  • The Book Scholarships will be awarded during the California Missionary Baptist State Youth Convention Annual Session in December.  Awardees must be in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been approved by the Committee.

Applications are available via the CMBSC website, through your local church, district, or you may request an application via email.

Simply email your request to one of the following committee members:

An application will be emailed to you within 24 hours.  However, a hard copy of the application must be returned via U.S. mail.  No email applications will be accepted.

Please return the following documents:

  • Completed Application
  • Two Reference Letters (No letter from applicant’s Pastor will disqualify the application.)
  • An Autobiographical sketch of yourself
  • Copy of your recent report card OR sealed transcript
  • Essay of selected topics (Please sign your name.)

Scholarships will be awarded based on the following criteria:

1. The application must be filled out completely.

2. Applicant must be an active member of a church that is currently registered in the CMBSC and also actively participating in the State Youth activity.  

3. Applicant must be a recently graduated High School Senior and currently enrolled full-time in an accredited and approved two-year or four-year college, university, or technical school, and must possess a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher.

4. Applicant must provide a copy of the most recent report card OR sealed transcript.  It must be submitted via U.S. mail and postmarked by midnight, 2nd Sunday in September.


5. Applicant must submit 2 letters of recommendation. (Your Pastor and a community member, who is a non-family member).  (No letter from applicant’s Pastor will disqualify the application.)

6. Applicant must submit a 250-word typewritten, self-composed essay, double-spaced and 12-pt font on one of the following two topics.  Also include your goals and aspirations for your future:

    1) “Why I Am Seeking Higher Education”

    2) “Why A Higher Education is Important To Me”.

          7.  NOTE: NO funds will be released until verification of enrollment as a full-time student into a college/technical educational program is provided to the Scholarship Committee by the Registrar/Admissions Office.

Each awardee will receive a book scholarship of $100.00 to $500.00.

ALL applications must be received by MIDNIGHT, 2nd Sunday in September
